The Hole in the Rock

I kept hearing about this fantastic site people were visiting in the North Island called “The Hole in the Rock”. I was a bit curious about what it was, and had a few ideas of what it might be, so I figured it was worth checking out. So while I was in Pahia I took a scenic tour on a nice boat all around the Bay of Islands and then out to the “Hole in the Rock”.
The photo above is after we took our boat through it, yup, the hole is big enough to take a rather large boat through this. And what makes this even more amazing is that during rough seas and bad weather, this hole is sometimes almost completely invisible because the waterline has risen so high.
Pahia

Pahia is the town I camped out in when I was staying in the Bay of Islands. It’s called the Bay of Islands because in this one bay there is a total of 144 islands and more are still being formed every few years as more and more underwater volcanoes create more islands. I spent a few days here and saw some awesome scenery. I did partake in a scenic boat tour which lasted about 3 hours long. We toured out and did some Dolphin watching as they are very common in this area. We were also given the opportunity to go and swim with the dolphins provided there weren’t any babies in the group. We were also told we were going out to the “Hole in the Rock” which is a cave created by wind and sea water. (continue reading…)
Travel Routes for New Zealand

North Island, NZ
A few weeks ago I went to FedEx Kinkos and had them laminate maps of both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. I then ordered some alcohol based pens so I could write on the Map and not have to worry about smudging the ink. The cool thing about these pens is that I can write on the map, while it’s raining, wet, hot, w/e and the ink dries immediately and will not smudge. So when I got the pens I ordered off Ebay, I busted out the map and started to look at the best routes for my trip. The first side I was exploring was the North Island.
